I love you, but I hate you, but I LOVE YOU

Continuing on my cold theme I have compiled a list of things that I love and hate about winter. It was much easier to think of things I love so I guess that means I’m in the right place! Although, I think today is more of a hate day considering the nasty commute I had to deal with this morning.

Things I hate about winter:

Having to get out of your warm, cozy bed in the morning.

Snow that has turned black and brown from car exhaust and sand.

Looking at leafless trees and brown dead grass before it snows.

Monotone days and gray skies.

That icky feeling of cold snow melting into your boots, mittens or against exposed skin.

Scraping ice off of your car windows in the morning and sitting in the cold car waiting for it to warm up while you watch your own breath swirl around you.

Sitting inside with long underwear on, covered in a blanket and still feeling chilled.

Getting on the highway after it snows and realizing that your commute is now going to be 3 hours long.

When it’s so cold that your eyelashes freeze as you walk.

The feeling of panic when you slide uncontrollably on an ice patch while you are driving.

Walking into a building and having your glasses fog up.

Accidentally stepping into a giant slush pile and getting your feet all cold and wet.

Going back to work after New Year’s knowing that your next vacation isn’t until Memorial Day at the end of May.

Things I love about winter:

When the car windows fog up, making the perfect surface for playing tic-tac-toe, baby footprints, or writing mysterious messages. Just before Christmas a message mysteriously appeared on Ryan’s car window that said “I am your conscious.” We don’t know who wrote it, spooky!

Late night sled races with my husband down the hill in our backyard.

Laying in the snow, feeling the cold of the snow through the warmth of your snowpants and jacket and just listening to the muted winter silence.

Waking up on the morning of the first snow, looking out the window and being blinded by glistening white blanket that covers the ground and clings to branches.

Dusting off the ice skates, sleds and skis and feeling a rush of joy from the speed of going down a hill or across the ice.

The satisfaction of a warm cup of hot cocoa after being outside.

Watching while someone opens the perfect Christmas present that you got for them.

Driving down the streets when it’s dark and seeing cheerful, colored Christmas lights.

The satisfying sound of crunchy ice, or a good run-slide across slippery ice on the sidewalk.

Gazing up at colossal piles of snow that go up to the top of lightposts.

Not having a reason to leave the house when it’s negative something outside.

Examining patterns of ice crystals on the window.

What’s your favorite or least favorite thing about winter?
